Feedback to PSDeurope – General

There is no greater gift than to be able to travel the world with your dog by your side. Burkhard & Beate have gifted me this treasure. As a US citizen, my dog Maddie is certified as a service animal within the states. When I decided to move to Europe, there was no question that Maddie would join the adventures. I quickly realized, when I got to the airport in Portugal to fly to Spain that my letter wasn’t enough for Maddie to sit with me on the plane, they told me she’d have to go in cargo. There was no way I was going to let that happen.

After weeks of hopeless searches to find a trainer to certify Maddie as a service animal within the EU, I finally found PSDEUROPE. I reviewed their website & emailed to ask if we could hop on a voice call to review my concerns. Burkhard Knapp responded right away, he was extremely kind & offered a FaceTime for a more formal introduction. I had the pleasure of e-meeting Burkhard & his wife Beate who answered all my questions & reassured me it would be possible to travel with my Maddie alongside me once again.

I studied hard actually had a lot of fun training Maddie (she really enjoyed all the treats too.) Both Beate & Burkhard were always so kind & resourceful to answer my questions along the way. They made a situation that could have been very stressful, extremely stress-free. Within appropriate time Maddie was a certified EU PSD Psychiatric Service Dog.

I am blessed beyond words for this organization. I have been able to fly with Maddie by my side throughout Europe. We’ve been from Portugal to Croatia, to Germany & Italy & it’s been a wonderful ride every time. The airport staff always loves to see Maddie walking the runway, it makes me so joyful to see their smiles. Maddie makes everyone’s day! Burkhard & Beate are doing Gods work & I am so grateful I found this pot of gold.

Happily,
T. & Maddie

ESA/PSD Newsletter 2022

Dear ESAeurope or PSDeurope Client

ESAeurope wishes you a good start into the New Year!

Let´s start with a bit of a tradition to look back and report about the development of ESAeurope and then inform about our plans!

We proudly can tell that our community is growing rapidly! Together we are learning to reap the benefits of a good human-animal relationship! Thank you for supporting the idea of putting animals in the hearts of people and our society. Our community is the engine of our success!

This is what we did in 2021:

  • Continue to develop our services website (example for more user-friendly support:  fast lane, Blogpage) and expand the content on our website.
  • Development and introduction of the PSD training course by means of e-learning as well as the establishment of a download center (for members) with important information and documents about PSD training)
  • Cooperation with EURO-DOGS.eu, a dog school specialized in PSD training and certification
  • Production of our PSDeurope image video in German and English for initial information when visiting the homepage
  • Switching to Stripe as a data secure payment method. 1% of all payments processed through Stripe are donated to climate preservation projects
  • Customer service: we have been able to answer and handle most inquiries within a few hours. We apologize for the few outliers. After all, we work part-time and largely on a voluntary basis

Developments in air travel:

The downgrading of ESA animals to pets except for dogs, which are recognized as PSDs under certain conditions, affects all airlines that align their pet policies with US DoT standards. Airlines in general have responded by redefining and strictly regulating the bringing of animals in the cabin. Essentially (with a few exceptions), ESA animals are no longer carried.

Response from ESA-Europe:
Emotional Support Dogs can be trained with our training program to become Psychiatric Service Dogs to US DoT standards and continue to fly in the cabin to USA/Canada or be booked on airlines that align their Pet Policy to US DoT standards in general.

We use this provision with our PSD training module according to US DoT standards that provides training for your dog to be certified as a PSD (Psychiatric Service Dog).

ESA-europe Recommendation: Prior to any air travel, clarify in writing with the airline whether the dog is allowed to fly. Our PSD training program covers all your dog’s needs, provides the knowledge necessary for air travel, stabilizes and improves you and your relationship with your dog. You will become a “Human-Animal Partner Team” that supports each other. The dog learns and takes over concrete tasks for your psychological well-being. Whether you fly or not, the benefits to you as a team are wonderful!

What we’re up to in 2022:

Thanks to dedicated members of our community, we now have a pool of expertise at our disposal that we can use in a relevant way to advance our definition of PSD and further develop our service delivery.

The most important step is to anchor PSDs in society, promote awareness among institutions and airlines, and have a definition of PSD that is also accepted in Europe.

Psychiatric service dogs should achieve the same status as other service dogs!
This would make the path of recognition of PSDs to travel in the cabin on flights worldwide much more likely. For this purpose, we have been working hard over the holidays on the new PSD-europe.eu site, which will accompany the vision and path. Have a look – here you can follow the way and also help to shape it – if you give us feedback or have ideas! Interactive development would make us very happy!

Let’s see where the open path leads in 2022. We will continue to react to all changes immediately with appropriate adaptations and inform you about it in the blog. Check back regularly and scroll through the pages of ESA-europe.eu und PSD-europe.eu. This way we all stay up to date and present together. That is already our wish to you!  Only together we are strong!

Finally, we wish humans and animals a healthy, successful 2022. Don´t forget humor and have good hours together!

Zeigen Sie Ihr Engagement.

Re: Permission to have a pet in my apartment

Dear (Name of landlord or manager),

I am writing to you today to contact you about an important issue. For medical reasons, I have an animal (insert animal). He/she is an ESA /Emotional Support Animal) It is prescribed by a (insert professional). It has official status as an ESA.

ESAs are globally recognized medical tools for people with mental health diagnoses who respond to animals.

I would like to make an appointment to provide the appropriate verification and discuss the conditions you have to qualify me as the owner of an ESA. If necessary, I would be happy to provide appropriate additional documentation, such as from the European Union Disability Act or the definition of an Emotional Support Animal and more detailed information on the benefits to humans. A letter from your current landlord speaking to how well-behaved and non-disruptive your pet is. Vet records, including records from vaccinations and checkups. Depending on the species – records from any training or obedience classes your pet has taken, spay or neuter records

I am happy to discuss any conditions or requirements you may have for my ESA to be accepted, as well as sign an appropriate agreement highlighting any limitations you may have regarding the ESA.

As I need my pet close to me to cope well with everyday life it is very important to me that the pet is kept in a species appropriate manner, clean and healthy. The animal is properly cared for, and no neighbors disturb. The animal (insert animal) is insured, I am liable for it.

I appreciate your willingness to discuss this issue with me. Please call (at/email) at (insert phone or email, depending on your preference for communication) so we can schedule a time to talk.

Kindly,

emergency flight to Canada

Airline: Air Canada
Destination: Vancouver

Flight: December 2021

Emergency to Canada

Hi Burkhard – yes we made it! It turned out to be a longer time in flight / plane as expected (~12 hours) – but B… did great. A lot of people commented how well he’s done and behaved.

The process after getting through the Air Canada Meda team was quite straightforward.
Today, we have gained also admittance into the hospital where my …. is – and it can be they ask us to bring him to other patients to visit. I will let you know how this turns out.
….
I am also happy to provide some feedback, but overall I can’t say anything other than you have been exceptional!
I greatly appreciate you both going over and above to help us out as our situation changed and needed to fly over here early. You put everything together as I needed it, and it would have been much more difficult for myself alone to get things straightened away as you have presented them!!!
Cheers,
J….

With Dalmatian to USA

Airline: TAP
Destination: New York

Flight: December 2021

Via New York to Houston

Hello Beate and Burkhard,

in the meantime we are almost in Houston; not only the flight worked out very well, but also the handling with border control, customs etc. was with and for J…. thanks to the ‘blue vest’. And the actually not insignificant pressure for us bipeds was really better to manage by his presence. ‘Psychiatric Service’ in the truest sense of the word! By the way, the muzzle was visibly hanging on the blue backpack the whole time (with blanket, emergency diaper pants – which we didn’t need – water bottle, etc.), but was not ‘requested’ by anyone. J… also behaved really well – I had the impression that he had grown a lot with his tasks, so to speak, and that he sensed very precisely what was important. We send a few first pictures enclosed, film sequences we cut then surely soon.

As you can see in the pictures, we added the PSD fabric patch to a blue harness. It looks neat for now, but the quality of the dishes suggests we’ll have to get a ‘backup’ soon.

….

In any case, once again a big thank you from me for your commitment to this cause; we are always happy to contribute in whatever way we can to support your work!

Mit Dalmatiner nach USA

Mit Dalmatiner nach USA

Fluglinie:          TAP
Destination:     New York

Flug:   Dezember 2021

Via New York nach Houston
