Hi Burkhard – yes we made it! It turned out to be a longer time in flight / plane as expected (~12 hours) – but B… did great. A lot of people commented how well he’s done and behaved.

Hello Beate and Burkhard,
in the meantime we are almost in Houston; not only the flight worked out very well, but also the handling with border control, customs etc. was with and for J…. thanks to the ‘blue vest’. And the actually not insignificant pressure for us bipeds was really better to manage by his presence. ‘Psychiatric Service’ in the truest sense of the word! By the way, the muzzle was visibly hanging on the blue backpack the whole time (with blanket, emergency diaper pants – which we didn’t need – water bottle, etc.), but was not ‘requested’ by anyone. J… also behaved really well – I had the impression that he had grown a lot with his tasks, so to speak, and that he sensed very precisely what was important. We send a few first pictures enclosed, film sequences we cut then surely soon.
As you can see in the pictures, we added the PSD fabric patch to a blue harness. It looks neat for now, but the quality of the dishes suggests we’ll have to get a ‘backup’ soon.

Hallo Beate und Burkhard,
inzwischen sind wir fast schon in Houston; nicht nur der Flug hat sehr gut geklappt, auch das Drumherum mit Border Control, Zoll usw. war mit und für J…. dank ‘blauer Weste’ gut zu bewältigen. Und der tatsächlich nicht unerhebliche Druck für uns Zweibeiner war durch seine Anwesenheit wirklich besser zu managen. ‘Psychiatric Service’ im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes! Der Maulkorb hing übrigens die ganze Zeit sichtbar am blauen Rucksack (mit Decke, Notfall-Windelhose – die wir nicht gebraucht haben -, Wasserflasche usw.), wurde aber von niemandem ‘angefordert’. J… hat sich aber auch wirklich toll verhalten – ich hatte den Eindruck, dass er sozusagen mit seinen Aufgaben ein ganzes Stück gewachsen ist und er sehr genau gespürt hat, worauf es ankam. Wir schicken anbei ein paar erste Bilder, Filmsequenzen schneiden wir dann sicherlich demnächst.
Wie ihr auf den Bildern sehen könnt, haben wir ein blaues Geschirr mit dem PSD-Stoffaufnäher versehen. Das sieht im Moment noch ordentlich aus, aber die Qualität des Geschirrs lässt vermuten, dass wir uns demnächst ein ‘Backup’ besorgen müssen.

Auf Grund der Tatsache, dass nahezu alle amerikanischen Airlines die PSD nach US DoT Standards akzeptieren und viele andere Airlines, besonders nach Südamerika und Mittelamerika noch etwas hinterherhinken, ist die Überlegung vernünftig mit eurem PSD Hund in Transit via USA zu buchen.
Auf Grund von Corona und den damit verbundenen Reisebeschränkungen ergeben sich allerdings besondere Bedingungen für Transitflüge, die wir in der Folge skizzieren. Ein guter Vorschlag in diesem Kontext ist mit Air Canada zu fliegen, da der Transit durch Kanada einfacher ist und auch bei Air Canada PSD’s nach den US DoT Standards akzeptiert werden.
Wer freut sich nicht auf einen lang ersehnten Urlaub? Die Reise wurde gebucht, z. B. nach Cancun, Mexiko oder Vancouver, Kanada. Es gibt einen kleinen Zwischenstopp von ein paar Stunden in den USA, denn der Flug führt Sie z. B. über Los Angeles oder New York. Währenddessen läuft die Urlaubsplanung für Ihre Reise auf Hochtouren: Welches Hotel sollen wir wählen? Welche Strandbekleidung schafft es in den Koffer? Stopp! Bevor Sie sich der Urlaubsvorfreude weiter hingeben, sollten Sie der Durchreise durch die Vereinigten Staaten Beachtung schenken. Denn der vermeintliche Zwischenstopp hat es in sich. Was die Durchreise für Sie bedeutet und was Sie beachten müssen, lesen Sie hier.
Auch wenn Ihre Hauptdestination nicht die Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika sind, bedeutet ein kurzer Transitaufenthalt von ein paar Minuten, einigen Stunden oder länger defacto eine Einreise in die USA. Deshalb müssen Sie sicherstellen, dass Sie die US-Einreisebestimmungen einhalten und Ihnen mangels sorgfältiger Vorbereitung die Weiterreise nicht verwehrt wird und Sie schlimmstenfalls am amerikanischen Transitschalter die Rückreise antreten müssen.
Grundsätzlich benötigen alle Personen, die keinen amerikanischen Pass haben, entweder ein Visum oder eine gültige ESTA-Einreisegenehmigung für eine Einreise in die USA, auch für Durchreisen von ein paar Minuten bzw. Stunden. Folgende Aufenthaltserlaubnisse können grundsätzlich infrage kommen:
ESTA (im Rahmen des Programms zur visumfreien Einreise, VWP) ist für die meisten Europäer*innen und viele andere Nationalitäten verfügbar. Hierfür muss der Reisende lediglich im Besitz einer aktuellen ESTA-Bewilligung sein. Diese ESTA-Genehmigung kann in wenigen Minuten online eingeholt werden.
Achtung: ESTA nicht mehr gültig nach Reisen in folgende Staaten: Irak, Iran, Jemen, Libyen, Somalia, Sudan und Syrien. Personen, die sich eigentlich für das ESTA-Verfahren qualifizieren (z. B. deutsche, österreichische oder schweizer Staatsbürger*innen), die aber seit 1. März 2011 die oben genannten Länder bereist haben, sind vom ESTA-Verfahren ausgeschlossen. Unweigerlich müssen diese Personen ein US-Visum beantragen, selbst wenn sie sich unter einer Stunde im Transit aufhalten.
Wenn Sie aus einem Land stammen bzw. einen Pass eines Landes haben, welches nicht für das ESTA-Verfahren zugelassen ist (z. B. Türkei oder Ukraine) oder Sie aus irgendeinem anderen Grund keine ESTA-Einreisegenehmigung bekommen, benötigen Sie auf alle Fälle ein US-Visum. Das passende Visum für Transit ist das sogenannte C-Visum. Hierfür müssen Sie einen Visumantrag stellen und an einem Interviewtermin im US-Konsulat Ihres Heimatlandes teilnehmen. Schiffsreisende, die mit einem Schiff zu einem nicht in den USA liegenden Zielort reisen und deren Schiff einen US-amerikanischen Hafen anläuft ohne dort anzulegen, benötigen ebenfalls ein Transitvisum oft auch als Kombination C-1/D Visum (für Crew Member) ausgestellt. Wir raten den Antrag rechtzeitig zu stellen, d. h. mindestens vier bis sechs Wochen vor geplanter Reise.
Folgende Voraussetzungen müssen erfüllt werden:

zu beantragen. Bei Bewilligung würden Sie die Befugnis haben, für die Dauer des Visums zu Transit-, geschäftlichen und touristischen Zwecken in die USA reisen zu dürfen. Insofern würden wir unseren Kund*innen die B-1 / B-2 Variante anraten, weil diese umfangreicher ist als das C-Visum. Die Gebühr ist übrigens identisch, d. h. egal ob C-1, B-1, B-2 oder B-1 / B-2, die konsularische Gebühr ist immer gleich hoch. Die aktuellen Visa-Gebühren finden Sie auf unserer Kostenseite.
Auch das B-Visum wird im Regelfall im Rahmen eines persönlichen Interviews in einem der zuständigen US-Konsulate beantragt. Planen Sie rund vier bis sechs Wochen Vorlaufzeit ein.
Personen, die beispielsweise über ein E-, L- oder H-Visum verfügen, dürfen für Arbeitszwecke in die Vereinigten Staaten einreisen. Wenn Sie jedoch zu rein privaten Gründen eine US-Durchreise planen, um z. B. in Mexiko Urlaub zu machen, so benötigen Sie entweder eine gültige ESTA-Einreisegenehmigung, ein C-Visum oder B-Visum.
In der Praxis wurden Reisende bisher auch oft mit einem Arbeitsvisum bei reinen Transits bzw. Durchreisen nicht abgewiesen. Jedoch gibt es auch Grenzbeamt*innen, die sehr strikt sind und im schlimmsten Fall die Durchreise per Arbeitsvisum nicht anerkennen
Seit dem Ausbruch der COVID-19 Pandemie wurde die Einreise in die USA sehr stark eingeschränkt. Infolge der US-Einreisesperre ist eine Einreise in die Vereinigten Staaten aus bestimmten Regionen (u. a. Schengenraum) aktuell und bis auf Weiteres verboten. Davon betroffen sind Visuminhaber*innen, Personen mit gültigen ESTA-Genehmigungen und Personen mit anderen gültigen Reisedokumenten – auch geimpfte oder genesene Personen.
Aktuell ist eine Einreise in die USA nur in wenigen Ausnahmefällen möglich. Ausnahmen gelten u. a. für enge Familienangehörige von US-Staatsbürger*innen und Green Card Inhaber*innen sowie für Personen, deren Einreise im nationalen Interesse der USA ist (= National Interest Exception, NIE).
In der Regel berechtigen Transitreisen durch die Vereinigten Staaten nicht zu dem Erhalt einer NIE-Ausnahmegenehmigung. Das bedeutet, dass Transitreisende, die sich innerhalb von 14 Tagen vor der geplanten Durchreise durch die USA in einem der Travel Ban Länder aufgehalten haben, im Normalfall nicht ohne Weiteres in die Vereinigten Staaten einreisen dürfen.
Transitreisende, die glauben, dass Ihre Durchreise durch die USA von dringender Notwendigkeit ist, sollten die US-Botschaft bzw. das US-Konsulat in Ihrem Heimatland kontaktieren.
Auch bei Transitreisen sind die US-Einreisebestimmungen in jedem Fall einzuhalten, damit der Traumurlaub oder eine Geschäftsreise nicht zum Alptraum wird.

Heute können wir ein weiteres Mal mit großer Freude feststellen, dass einer unserer ESAeurope Kunden erfolgreich mit Ihrem Hund geflogen ist. Dieses Mal von Thailand nach Zypern.
Unsere Kundin M. hat sich vor einigen Wochen entschlossen mit Ihrem Hund Maui eine PSD Ausbildung zu beginnen um ihn von Thailand nach Zypern mitzunehmen. M. hat sich nach langen Jahren in Thailand entschieden ihr neues Lebensglück in Zypern zu finden.
Nachdem alle Airlines die Beförderung nach Zypern als normales Pet oder als ESA abgelehnt haben (Singapore Airlines hätte Maui als ESA akzeptiert, fliegt aber nicht nach Zypern) hat sich M. an uns gewandt um eine Ausbildung als PSD (psychiatric service dog) zu buchen und abzuschliessen. ESAeurope hat mit M. ein Paket zusammengestellt um Maui entsprechend zu schulen und dann als PSD zu zertifizieren. Dies hat wunderbar geklappt und M. konnte Maui mit Qatar Air bis Zypern mitnehmen.
