You want to register your animal as an Emotional Support Animal, or as a PSD (Psychiatric Service Dog) , so that your animal can accompany you even when this is not possible under normal circumstances. We have developed the non-profit project ESAeurope to help with this intention.

When your animal is with you, you are more relaxed, more confident, more present in the here and now, less lonely, freer from constraints and other emotional limitations, more open in everyday life to many activities and you are much more than without your animal.

ESAeurope Card but also the new PSD Card should help to make trips with the companion animal and to take your animal to public facilities. We are working to expand this service as much as possible.

The PSD – training of your dog to a confirmed Psychiatric Service Animal according to US DoT standards, which is currently under development, is thus another important step. The registration process with ESAeurope (applies to both ESA and PSD) is simple and free of charge and you will receive an email confirmation of your animal registration. The main points of our offer are basically the ESAeurope Card as well as in further consequence the PSD Card, in combination with the corresponding training for Psychiatric Service Dog (according to US DoT Standard’s)

Note on the issuance of the ESAeurope Card as well as the PSDeurope Card:
Please note that a confirmation from your psychotherapist or doctor is required for the issuance of the full ESAeurope Card, but also the PSDeurope Card. You can download the corresponding form in the store free of charge. As a rule, this confirmation is issued by psychotherapists, care associations and also general physicians very gladly, since the benefit of an animal for the respective person concerned is clearly proven.

ESAeurope Card (confirms the status of your animal as an Emotional Support Animal)

The ESAeurope Card is possible for all types of animals and documents the special psychological / psychiatric assistance that your animal provides to you. For the issuance of the ESAeurope Card a confirmation of your physician or psychiatrist is necessary, after which your animal and you form an inseparable team. Currently, however, we must point out that Emotional Support Animals are being treated as normal “Pets” (domestic animals) by more and more airlines, as they do not require any immediate training. So, if you need the ESAeurope Card mainly for airplane trips, we recommend to purchase the PSDeurope Card and train your dog accordingly.

PSD Card as well as PSD Online Training – (confirms your dog’s status as a psychiatric service animal).

with specific proficiency testing to meet US DoT (Department of Transport) standards, which will enable you and your dog to fly in the cabin with all airlines (in development) that accept US DoT standards. You can acquire the PSDCard if you either prove the necessary training and examination (specifications can be found in our FAQ’s) or if you book a corresponding online training with us and also take the necessary examination.
We understand the training offered by us as help for self-help. You train your dog and we provide the essential guidelines, goals and procedures. The training is completed with an examination, which tests and confirms the imparted training contents. A certificate issued by ESAeurope as well as the PSDeurope Card documents the status of the dog as a PSD according to US DoT standards.

What is an Emotional Support Animal?

Emotional Support Animals (ESA) are animals, typically dogs but sometimes cats or other animals, that provide therapeutic benefits through affection and companionship to their owner with mental/psychiatric dysfunction or context related limitations (fear of flying, claustrophobia, etc.). Emotional support animals should have the required health, temperament suitability, obedience, and strong positive social and environmental behaviors to provide specific assistance to support their owner in daily life.

It is important to know that an ESA animal has not been trained to perform a specific task. Its sole function is to be your emotional support animal. Therefore, ESAs are not considered service animals. Therefore, they should not be confused or compared with working dogs, such as guide dogs for the blind, assistance animals, service animals, therapy animals, or visiting assistance dogs that have been trained to perform specific tasks. Of course, an ESA can be trained as a service animal and then enjoy the benefits associated with licensure (e.g., as an assistance animal). However, please also note that if you register a dog, for example, it does not become an assistance dog through the registration process!

WHAT IS A PSD (PSYCHIATRIC SERVICE DOG)?

PSYCHIATRIC SERVICE DOG’S (PSD) are DOGS that provide therapeutic benefits to their owner with mental/psychiatric dysfunction or context related limitations (fear of flying, claustrophobia, etc.) through affection and companionship while being trained to reinforce those limitations not only through their existence but also through individual skills; thus, they take on specialized tasks. PSD’s must have the necessary health, character aptitude, obedience, as well as a distinct positive social and environmental behavior, so that they can support their owner in everyday life with specific, individually oriented assistance.
